Book Week
What an amazing week we had celebrating Book Week at Mitcham Primary School. Children were busy in the library reading the CBCA shortlisted books, completing challenges to enter the competition to win a pack of books, capturing dreams in the BFGs dream jars and visiting the Great Book Swap. A special thank you to everyone who brought along books to donate and $2 to spend at the Great Book Swap – we raised $646 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Mitcham’s Big Read tradition continued on Wednesday when all children visited another class, read the teacher’s favourite book with them and completed an activity. There were so many activities happening around the school. Some created the Eiffel Tower from marshmallows and spaghetti, some made clay and sequin fish masterpieces, others made beautifully feathered and colourful birds.
Book Week culminated in the parade on Friday morning and it was awesome to see so many children join in the spirit of Book Week and dress as their favourite book character or dress to this year’s theme ‘Dreaming With Eyes Open’. Thankfully the weather was beautiful and we could welcome parents to enjoy the parade with us.
Premiers Reading Challenge
A friendly reminder that all Premiers Reading Challenge forms need to be returned to the library by Thursday 8 September.

Last week was Book Week and our class had a fabulous time celebrating Dreaming With Our Eyes Open. The week began with us creating our dream stories with a sizzling start. We then decorated groovy glasses to depict our dream story visually.
On Tuesday we had a visit from Belinda Piffl, who read us her family’s favourite novel, The Midnight Gang. This was a great experience and the students were grateful to Belinda for spending some time in our class. We all created our own disgusting menu based on what we read.
Wednesday was the Big Read. Each of the classes got to move to another class to read the teacher’s favourite picture book and do some fun activities around that. Mrs O did Room on the Broom. A family favourite and one she could probably read off by heart.
Thursday N6 got to do a Buddy Class activity in the library. We read a book to our buddies and heard their reading. Getting together with our buddy class not only allows us to be connected to the younger years it is also a lot of fun!
Friday saw the annual Book Week Parade. We had many characters dress up and really enjoyed seeing all the creativity and thought that goes in to everyone’s ideas for dressing up as their favourite book character. Everyone loved the day and the week!
In other news we have been busily working on our final art research project. These can be viewed in N6 on Open Night in Week 7. We are also finalising our Game On! Project. We looked at the Commonwealth Games and sports that are played there and why we have a Commonwealth. In the coming weeks we will be designing and creating our own sport or game to be played later in the term with N5 in a friendly bit of competition.

Last week N5 had the opportunity to spend time thinking about and reading their favourite books. The highlight of Book Week was of course the Book Week Parade. There were some creative and thoughtful costumes for the theme dreaming with our eyes open.
Another highlight of the week was our visiting reader. A parent from our class, Paul Bauer read us his favourite book, ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ about being kind and thoughtful and ‘filling other people’s buckets’. We learnt that when we are ‘bucket fillers’ we fill our own ‘buckets’ too! When we dip other people’s buckets we empty our buckets. We have been practising being bucket fillers. (We also learned that The Adelaide Crows do this too!).
When we filled each other's buckets we filled our own. Here are some ideas on how to fill your bucket!
As part of STEM learning this term, T1 and T2 students have had a focus on digital technology and have been using the Sphero’s as a basis for our learning. Spheros are a small coding robotic ball that is controlled through an IPad or computer.
This term, Students started off working in pairs to develop a set of codes that allowed the sphero to move, change colour and make sounds. Once the basics were achieved, students were challenged to design and build a short track. They then developed a set of codes that allowed the sphero to move around it in one go. As designers and programmers, Students not only had to test and revise their codes to ensure they had a successful outcome, they demonstrated problem solving skills, persistence and the ability to listen and take turns with their partner.
We are now in the process of linking our digital technology skills to our learning in HaSS.Students are designing their own maps and codes for their spheros to travel on. We can’t wait to share these with our families during Open Night.

Do you have a child who is due to begin Reception in January 2023 but you haven’t submitted an enrolment form yet?
We are now beginning to plan next year’s classes so it’s really important that we have your child’s enrolment form as soon as possible.
Is your child leaving MPS in 2023?
If your child is in Reception to Year 5 this year and will not be returning to Mitcham in 2023, please contact the front office by email or in person to obtain a Clearance Form, and return it as soon as possible. This will allow us to confirm our student numbers and begin the class placement process.
If you would like an enrolment form or a clearance form, please contact the front office on 8271 2227 or email: dl.0270.admin@schools.sa.edu.au
When an ice block or icecream is ordered on Qkr! with lunch, children must return to the canteen to collect it after they have finished eating their lunch. We have a swap system in place where children give us the empty lunch bag and we will give them their ice block. This will ensure that frozen items stay cold until they are ready to be eaten, particularly as we move into warmer weather. Please remind your child to come to the canteen after eating their lunch if you have placed an ice-block order.
There are still many outstanding emergency lunch payments that have not been paid. Please pay on Qkr! ASAP. Thank you. Have a great weekend.
